One of my biggest problems in life is balance. Balance between work, balance between mom life, balance with being a wife, balance with being a daughter, definitely balance with being a friend and especially my balance with reading. I was so excited to dive in to Kendall by Daphne Hargrow, I actually guilted myself with putting it off but it was the first real spring weekend here in New England to enjoy with family as well as one of my dear friends having her “sprinkle shower” and those needed to take priority. I kept saying “I need to get to reading” and felt guilt but once I started the book (especially Grandma Bev’s qualms) that guilt finally went away.
The plot of this 267 page book is – She doesn’t have time for a relationship, but maybe she could swing a one-night stand. After all, he’s just a stripper, so no need to worry about the future… or a broken heart.
Kendall has it all: a soaring law career, a bank account filled with cash, and an apartment overlooking the Chicago River. Her life couldn’t get any better; at least that’s what she thinks before she hosts a bachelorette party for her younger cousin, Ruthie.
What starts out as a low-key soiree quickly turns into an evening of debauchery when two strippers show up unexpectedly. During their act, Kendall can’t keep her eyes off the dark and stoic Giovanni. Fueled by too many Moscow Mules and ignited by the male form, her suppressed desire smolders.
With the prodding of her older cousin Freya, Kendall pursues a one-night stand with Gio. But when she realizes she wants more, Kendall is forced to reexamine her priorities as well as her lifelong definition of success.
My View – There is a saying, “your cousins are your first friends in life.” Do you know that one? I do! I remember at one point in my life thinking my cousins were like siblings I just didn’t see all that often. However my brothers and I went to three different boarding schools, so my view on that may be a little distorted, but after you read this first book in the Lonely Spinsters Club Series, you will definitely understand it for yourself.
Now, as I just stated, this is the first book in the series and sometimes they can be slow to start. This one is one of those, so if you are reading it please take my advice and keep reading. That is just the base for this story to grow from and Daphne has a way of writing that brings these characters to life! I know the plot gives you a lot to go on… Kendall is a lawyer who over works to reach her dreams with zero balance in her life. If you read my intro, you now understand my point. Also, although I love to argue like it’s my job, I now know will all certainty I would never want it to be. Then there is stripper Gio… ohhh Gio… But is a stripper all he is? Why does he strip? Is there a bigger reason behind his decisions and the things he does? Bet I got your wheels turning now didn’t I?
So, if those questions are not enough to pique your interest, you don’t find beautiful cousins intriguing, you don’t like romance and the butterfly feeling of relationship firsts, you don’t get humor and don’t appreciate strong minded grandmothers, then not only will you not like this book but we can’t be friends.
In other words, check it out!!!! Now onto Willow and I pray more of Grandma Bev’s “wisdom”…
